"GROW Show Share" Penarth’s latest gardening, growing and making event, is gathering momentum and the deadline for entries has been extended.

Organisers have extended the deadline until Wednesday, September 2 and are looking for anyone looking to display anything they have grown or made out of produce: flowers, fruit, vegetables, preserves to show off.

The aim of the event is not to see who has grown the perfect bean or biggest marrow but rather to help prove that - as the organisers have attested - Penarth really is the "garden by the sea".

Unlike traditional horticultural shows, there won’t be formal judging at the event with the public voting on their favourite submissions.

Competitions for children will also play a large part in this event with something for all ages, including competitions for a 60 second video of anything growing in Penarth, the tallest sun flower, miniature gardens and a photography competition.

Committee member of the Friends of St Augustines Church - where the event will take place next month - Andrew Davidson has said about the event: "It will provide a wonderful opportunity to show the world that Penarth is not just one of the 30 best places to live in the UK, but also somewhere people grow fantastic vegetables, fruit and flowers and are exceptionally creative.

"I loved the old horticultural show and want to help recreate that spirit of excitement and pride – but in a different way that will suit a different generation.”

Anyone who has anything they want to take along can pick up an entry form from the library, Hi Plan or Griffin Books – or via www.friendsofstaugustines.org.uk

There are categories for children, adults and families.

The event will take place at St Augustine’s Church on Saturday, September 19 at 11am to 5pm and on Sunday, September 20 at 12noon to 4.15pm.

The show will be opened by Victoria Wade, RHS Gold Medallist on Saturday, September 19.

Entry for adults is £2, children go for free. There is no charge for entering items.
