AN independent living scheme, with bases in Barry and Penarth, has received a prestigious award.

Newydd Housing Association has been awarded two stars by the Centre for Housing support for its independent living schemes where they have four in Barry and Penarth.

Newydd was tested and scored on the quality of the services delivered. The housing association needed to prove its commitment to delivering positive outcomes to improve the quality of life of tenants.

An independent assessor carried out a thorough review of Newydd’s services, speaking to staff, tenants and partners to gain a better understanding of how the service is viewed by the people that receive it. Areas investigated as part of the assessment included value for money, a personalised service, respect, involvement and safety from abuse.

Linda Chamberlain, a tenant at Elis Fisher Court, one of Newydd’s independent living scheme in Barry, said, “Getting this accreditation is fantastic news, speaking personally everything here is wonderful. I feel secure and can manage my property, Newydd staff will do their best to sort out any problem and provide a great service. We can influence the way things are run here, it’s great that we can get involved. I love it.”

The Centre for Housing Support set nationally agreed expectations and good practice, as well as providing a clear and supportive environment for organisations to demonstrate and improve the quality of the services they deliver.

Christine Walker, director at the Centre for Housing Support said, “We are delighted to award Newydd with two Stars; this achievement demonstrates that they are delivering a good quality service, supporting their residents to achieve positive outcomes. This is an accreditation with ‘teeth’, they should feel very proud of their achievement; it proves they put residents at the heart of everything they do.”
