A PENARTH pub has been voted 'pub of the year' for the second year in a row by members of the local branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend members voted for the Golden Lion on Glebe Street calling it a "genuine pub, with layout and design that makes it great to drink there".

They also commended the superb quality of two or three well-chosen ales it stocks from Welsh breweries.

CAMRA said the pub is also operated with an emphasis on fine food, while praising its seating outside the front and view across Cardiff Bay to the back.

Whilst the guide only takes into account the quality of the ale, the pub of the year award also considers style, atmosphere, decoration, service and welcome, community focus and value for money.

The Golden Lion is part of the JW Bassett group of pubs.

Paul Harper has run the Glebe Street pub for eight years and said he was delighted to have backed up last year's achievement.

"We are really pleased with the award," Mr Harper said. "The staff have worked really hard to back up their efforts which saw us win it last year.

"When I came in here, we weren't selling much bitter but over time we have increased our sales massively."

Mr Harper was pleased the award also recognised the atmosphere and service at the pub and said it was great to have it acknowledged that they are doing well on these fronts too.

CAMRA pubs officer for the Vale of Glamorgan John Chapman said: "The quality of the beer is the most important single factor in judging a pub for CAMRA award, with a range appreciated by both locals and visitors.

"The Lion usually has three well chosen real ales from great Welsh breweries, with pump clips lined up behind the bar showing which tempting ales are waiting in the cellar to come on next."

CAMRA also praised the pub's "unusual, but attractive" beer garden, "friendly, fast and efficient service" and the good value for money at the pub.

The Pilot, based on Queen's Road in Penarth, also received recognition with a highly commended status.

Both pubs were also named on CAMRA's 43rd edition of the good beer guide for 2016 and were selected from a choice of nearly 200 recognised real ale pubs and clubs in the branch area
