AGE Cymru and Western Power Distribution (WPD) have teamed up to remind Penarth residents over 65 to be prepared for the cold weather.

The older people’s charity and the electricity distribution company are giving thermometer cards to remind people to keep their homes warm to make it less likely of getting ill through cold related conditions like flu, colds or even chest infections.

WPD has also included information on what to do in case of a power cut.

Spread the Warmth is Age Cymru’s campaign to help keep older people across Wales warm, safe and well over the winter, and this year, WPD is supporting the charity’s work in this area.

Age Cymru and WPD have also put together a list of tips for older people on preparing for cold weather.

Age Cymru’s Spread the Warmth coordinator Angharad Phillips said: “With cold weather forecast, it’s a good time to be thinking ahead and planning to keep ourselves warm, safe and well over the coming weeks.

“We have also put together a list of health tips and simple jobs that we would benefit from getting done around our homes before the temperature drops.”

WPD’s network service manager Phil Davies explains, “We always tell our customers in advance of any planned power cuts that take place as a result of us undertaking essential maintenance or repairs to our network.

“But from time to time power cuts happen due to circumstances beyond our control, so it’s important to be prepared.

“The thermometer cards are an ideal way of reminding older people how to prepare and also what to do during an unexpected power cut during the winter months.”

The thermometer cards are available from Age Cymru Enterprises Limited Cardiff, 58 Merthyr Road, Whitchurch and Age Cymru, T? John Pathy, 13/14 Neptune Court, Vanguard Way, Cardiff.
