NOBODY has been found after searches were launched following a man being seen entering the water near the Esplanade in Penarth on Sunday, January 24.

South Wales Police said that they are making some inquiries but have not received a missing persons appeal and at this stage are not looking for a particular individual.

Coastguard and Lifeboat crews have not been called out again after the search was suspended at 8pm on January 24 but lifeboats are ready to launch if needed.

Rescue teams had launched an "extensive search" for the man in the earlier that evening

Penarth and Barry Dock Lifeboat crews and Penarth coastguard crews were tasked at around 5pm on Sunday, January 24 to make a total search of the area between Sully Island and Rhymney River.

Barry Coastguard was then tasked an hour later when it was realised that more resources would be needed.

The man was spotted entering the sea about 500m from the lifeboat station slipway on the Esplanade by a member of the public.

South Wales Police and Coastguard rescue helicopter 187 were also in attendance to assist with the operation.

Despite the efforts of rescue teams, the man was not found in the water and a spokeswoman for Barry Dock lifeboat station said the search was suspended at 8pm.

Penarth Coastguard finished their operations at 9.30pm.

During the search, lifeboats were also tasked to two groups of people cut of by the tide, one group were winched to safety by helicopter, the other were recovered by a D Class vessel.
