A PRIMARY school has achieved a 'good' rating in its latest inspection report.

St Andrew's Major Primary School in Dinas Powys, which currently has 232 pupils, was judged to be performing well and have good prospects for the future in the report published by ESTYN on Thursday, April 28.

The inspection was carried out in February 2016 by a team comprising of Dr Peter David Ellis, Eleri Anwen Hurley, Matthew Evans, Philippa Catherine Minto, and Gen Hallett, the school's headteacher since September 2014.

The reasons given for the good current performance included good progress of pupils in oracy, literary and numeracy skills, good provision for pupil care, support and guidance, improving attendances and good pupil behaviour.

Their future prospects were said to be good because of effective leadership from the headteacher and senior management, a culture of team work and self-evaluation and their work with other schools in the area to share good practice.

The report measures three main criteria including how good outcomes, provision and leadership are.

In all three areas the school was rated as 'good.'

Recommendations from the report included implementing the national literacy framework to ensure more consistent pupil progress, ensuring consistency in the provision for pupils' investigative and independent learning skills and improving opportunities for pupils to use the Welsh language.

Mike Glavin, head of school improvement and inclusion at the Vale council, said: "We are delighted that the hard work of the school has been recognised in this Estyn Report.

"In particular the report highlighted good teaching, effective and efficient management of the school by the headteacher, and the high standard of our pupil’s behaviour as factors contributing to the school’s performance.

"It is pleasing that inspectors also recognised that provision for care support and guidance is a strength in our school, including high quality support for pupils that have additional learning needs.”

St Andrew's Major head teacher, Mrs Hallett said: “We are delighted with the outcome of the recent inspection which recognised the strengths of the school.

"This is a reflection of the commitment and hard work of the pupils, staff and governors of St Andrews Major Church in Wales Primary School.”
