A FAMILY is appealing for the local community to help a young man with Down's Syndrome achieve his dream of independent living.

Danny Hudson has been studying at Bridgend College for three years on a course which encourages life skills.

During the course, the 22-year-old has learnt important practical living skills, including food preparation and money management.

The local authority has turned down funding provision because they say they could meet his needs locally.

But his family wish for him to continue on his studies in Bridgend because they feel this is the best chance he has to prepare for living independently.

Now, they are set to hold a fundraiser in Penarth to help meet their target of £25,000

Family and friends have been staging various events including half marathons, concerts, quizzes and walks all year in an effort to raise money for the place.

They have raised £15,000 since July for the cause.

The latest event, called "Dan's Whizz Quiz", is set to be held in Penarth Conservative Club, on Saturday (May 21).

Bridgend College have already offered him the opportunity to extend his learning at the site.

It offers a residential placement in a purpose-built shared environment, linked to supported local work placements.

His mum, Kath Hudson, said: "As any parent would, we want to try to provide the best for our children, so we have decided to go it alone and try to raise the full year costs ourselves.

"Danny is really excited about the prospect of continuing his links to Bridgend College and he would be devastated if we do not pursue this course of action to achieve his dream."

The fundraising quiz will begin at 7.30pm this Saturday.

Tables of up to six can be booked for £5 per head. Refreshments will be included.
