A GAS pipe replacement programme costing £800,000 will get underway next week in Penarth

Wales & West Utilities is investing the money to replace more than 6.5km of old metal gas pipes with new, longer lasting plastic ones on Redlands Road.

The work will take place on Redlands Road for eight weeks starting on Monday, June 13 and is being done by their contract partner Amec Foster Wheeler.

They anticipate it will be finished by the end of August.

A spokesman for Wales & West said that this essential work will make sure the area continues to receive a "safe and reliable" gas supply now and into the future.

To ensure the safety of road users, the local community and workers, there will be traffic lights in place during the work.

This has been agreed with Vale of Glamorgan Council and they company says they have worked closely with the local authority to keep disruption to a minimum.

Wales & West Utilities programme controller for Wales, Francis Kirk, said: "We know the effect that this sort of work can have on communities, and we will have a team on site throughout the project.

"Where possible we will be working weekends to make sure that we get the job finished as safely and as quickly as possible, and to minimise disruption for local people and road users.

"The work on Redlands Road is part of our gas pipe investment programme for the area, essential to make sure homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply now and into the future."
