VALE politicians have paid tribute to murdered Labour MP Jo Cox, who was shot and stabbed outside her constituency office in Yorkshire.

A mother to two young children, 41-year-old Jo Cox died following the incident yesterday (Thursday, June 17) afternoon. The alleged gunman - who eyewitnesses claim shouted "put Britain First" before the attack - was arrested at scene.

Local politicians took to social media to express their grief at the death of Mrs Cox.

Vale councillor and MP for Ogmore Chris Elmore called Mrs Cox "the nicest and kindest person you could ever wish to meet."

He said: "I am devastated beyond words. A glorious light has gone out. A beautiful, kind, funny and amazing person. May you forever be at peace Jo.

"Jo was murdered doing the job she loved. We must not ever forget what a brilliant and remarkable person she was."


Penarth MP Stephen Doughty wrote: "A dreadful day. One of our leading humanitarians, doing her job for her constituents. What have we come to?

"RIP Jo. Someone who truly made a difference."



Vale of Glamorgan MP Alun Cairns said: "Devastated to learn that Jo Cox MP has passed away.

"My thoughts are with her family, friends and constituents. I once asked Jo Cox which MP she worked for, she looked so youthful. I was hugely embarrassed and we both laughed. Very sad, such a nice person."


Vale AM Jane Hutt wrote on Twitter: "I am shocked and horrified at the murder of Jo Cox MP."

Deputy leader of the Vale council Lis Burnett wrote simply that "no words" would suffice and that she was "so, so sad".

Regional AM and leader of the Welsh Conservatives Andrew RT Davies Tweeted: "Killed doing her job serving her community and her constituents. Simply dreadful."
