A ROCK and roll dance is set to form part of Penarth's summer festival this year.

On Saturday, July 9, Penarth is set to "rock around the clock" at the dance which will be held at the Paget Rooms on Victoria Road.

It is being held as as part of the town's summer festival celebrations.

Phil Haley and his Comments will perform the 1954 classic Rock Around the Clock which was originally released by Bill Haley and his Comets

Then, in 1962, a young Paul ‘Legs’ Barrett and Dave ‘Batman’ Goddard promoted their first rock’n’roll dance at the Paget Rooms with The Backbeats.

Mr Goddard played bass in the band and Mr Barrett was their manager and he then went on to manage Shakin’ Stevens and the Sunsets.

And now, they are promoting the 2016 Holiday Festival Rock’n’Roll dance together.

They told the Penarth Times: "We both missed seeing Bill Haley in 1957 because Dave was too young, and Paul only had 15 shillings on him and the only tickets left cost a guinea so he couldn’t get in.

"Bill Haley was playing at the Capitol theatre in Queen Street in Cardiff and we have never seen a queue like it.

"People were queueing all the way down Queen Street, Churchill Way and down to Bridge Street.

"But we did manage to see him in 1962 at Sophia Gardens when a gang of us went down from Penarth."

A spokeswoman for the event said: "Phil Haley and his Comments are a fantastic rock’n’roll band and pay tribute to Bill Haley in an authentic way.

"There will also be records played by local DJs Riffs & Quiffs aka Shelley Norton and Liam Curtin.

"It is sure to be a memorable night."

Tickets are £10 each and are available from Griffin Books in Windsor Arcade or by ringing Paul Barrett on 029 2070 4279.
