A GARDENER from Dinas Powys has won a gold medal for her design at a national show at her first attempt.

Eileen Wood is a garden designer and exhibited at this year's RHS Tatton Flower Show which took place from July 20-24.

She won for her back to back garden called A View Within.

The garden was raising awareness of the new website Diabetes 16-25.

The website was created by a university student living with Diabetes, and is about linking young adults living with the condition to share knowledge and experiences.

Diabetes 16-25 is available to help young people with type one Diabetes develop confidence and independence in dealing with exam stress, moving to college or university, learning to drive and overseas travel.

The flower show is one of the Northwest’s calendar highlights, with two days of coverage on the BBC Gardeners’ World programme.

Toby Buckland from the programme met with her in the garden to find out about her inspiration.

The garden was designed for young "city slickers" living in a new build property and show cased a private reading corner set within a contemporary space.

The garden included influences from Japanese design with planting that was inspired from memories of generational gardening.

Ms Wood used plants and acquisitions to add "charm and personality" to the modern low maintenance landscaping materials.

She said: "I have great memories from gardening with my grandparents and later with my children.

"The action of connecting with each other through generational gardening, sharing experiences and sharing knowledge is a great way to develop skills

and strengthen confidence for all age groups."
