AN HISTORIC ship will be celebrate her 70th anniversary with four sailing days from Penarth.

The Waverley, the world's last sea-going paddle steamer, sets sail from Penarth Pier in September to Ilfracombe and Lundy Island and for a cruise up the River Severn.

The Waverley was launched in 1946 and has now sailed longer in preservation than she did in commercial enterprise.

She has been restored with funnels, timber decks and varnish and brass.

She sails on Saturday September 3 and Sunday September 4 to visit Ilfracombe and Lundy Island.

On Friday September 2, she will cruise up the River Severn and on Monday September 5 she makes her way past Flat Holm and Steep Holm and down the Somerset coast.

Ross Cochrane, the Waverley’s captain, said: "I am proud to be at the helm of this beautiful historic ship in this anniversary year.

"Paddle Steamers have sailed on the Bristol Channel since the 1800s and the Waverley continues this tradition more than 200 years later.

"There is nothing better than sailing on Waverley and enjoying some of the best scenery in the world in a very unique way.

"There are a range of trips to suit everyone, young and old, so bring the family and friends along for a great day out.

"I look forward to welcoming you onboard."

The Waverley has onboard facilities including a restaurant, two bars, heated lounges and a souvenir shop.

Prices start at £23 for Adults, half fare for children under 18 and under 5s travel free.
