STUDENTS from St Cyres School are celebrating after receiving results in their A-levels and AS-levels.

Pupils awarded A* and A grades increased by five per cent, compared to previous years.

The school, whose pupils have secured placements from universities, including Bath to Swansea, also saw 79 per cent of the results graded from A* to C and 98 per cent of pupils being awarded the Welsh Baccalaureate.

Charlie Baister, 18, achieved the highest A-level results in the school, with an A* in History and three As in Geography, Politics and Welsh Baccalaureate.

He said: "I'm over the moon.

"I can't believe it. I mean, I didn't expect these results.

"I'm just so overwhelmed."

Mr Baister will be studying politics at Bath University from September.

Laura Jones, 17, recieved her AS grades, and hopes to go to Leeds University.

"I got an A in Art and two Bs in Art History and RE," she said.

"I'm happy with my AS results - and I'm one step closer to going to the university I want to go to."

Other individual AS-level achievements included Daisy Farrow, 17, who was "pleasantly surprised" with her A in History, B in English Literature and Language, and B in Politics. Jack Corsi, 17, who hopes to study computer science at university, was "thrilled" with his A in computer science, A in mathematics, A in biology and C in physics.

Dr Jonathan Hicks, head teacher of St Cyres School, congratulated the pupils on their "excellent results".

"The hard work of our students, and the professionalism and dedication of our teaching staff, who have supported them every step of the way, have once again produced excellent results," he said. "Our Year 13 students have risen to the challenges we have set them and we are incredibly proud of them. I congratulate them on their achievements and wish them well in the next stage of their lives. Education should be a lifelong habit and our students are now well-placed to achieve further success, both at university and in their future success."
