WORK is set to get underway to convert a former nursing home into a new "age-exclusive" housing development.

The former Bryneithin home off St Andrew's Road, which closed in 2013, will be transformed into Arbor Vale, a 24 property development for people over the age of 50.

The work is being carried out by Portabella, in collaboration with Principality Commercial.

The application was approved in December 2015 for the former care home site which was sold by the Vale council because it was too old to meet modern care and accommodation standards

The scheme, designed by Penarth architect Nigel Arnold, consists of three and four-bedroom townhouses and two-bedroom apartments.

Portabella said the development will particularly appeal to people looking to downsize or "right size."

David Loosemore, managing director of Portabella, said: “We’re looking forward to creating a community for like-minded people who want a low-maintenance, energy-efficient home within a high-quality development in a sought-after location.

"The concept of rightsizing comes from people living in houses that have become too large for their needs who don’t necessarily want to compromise on the size and quality of their living and entertaining space when looking to move.

"Often people just need to reduce the number of bedrooms.”

There will be a community event for people to find out more about Arbor Vale which takes place at Lee Hall on Tuesday, September 20 from 4-7pm.

Gareth Redding, senior portfolio manager at Principality Commercial said: "We are delighted to be working with Portabella on this development to provide new, quality housing.

"Dinas Powys has a great sense of community and by transforming the Bryneithen Home site there will be more high-quality homes available for people who are looking to downsize."
