IT WAS good to attend the recent wreath-laying ceremony organised by the Penarth branch of the Royal Air Forces Association, to commemorate the 76th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, and an honour to lay a wreath on behalf of constituents.

The annual ceremony at the War Memorial in Alexandra Gardens is a moving occasion, commemorating the first decisive battle in history that was fought entirely in the air. The British strategic response coupled with the immense bravery and skill of the RAF pilots prevented Germany from achieving its objective of destroying British air defences.

The annual commemoration, led nationally and in towns and cities across the country by the RAFA and local branches like Penarth (which celebrated its 70th anniversary last month), remembers not only this but also the efforts of so many others who contributed at that time – the drivers, radar operators, plotters, ARP wardens, firefighters, nurses and more.

Of course so many people were affected by Luftwaffe bombing across the country – including in Penarth and Cardiff - and it is a time to remember their sacrifices too.

It is always particularly good at these events to see young people participating, and the Air Cadets of 1148 Penarth Squadron did themselves proud during the parade and service (and great to see they were joined by young members of 2077 Pontyclun Squadron too).

The air cadets is a really fantastic organisation, which not only promotes and encourages a practical interest in aviation and the Royal Air Force, but also encourages the spirit of adventure and develops qualities of leadership and good citizenship – useful skills not only for a future in the Services but in so many aspects of civilian life too.

It’s great that young people in Penarth have the opportunity to join local groups like the air cadets and also the sea cadets, which is another fantastic organisation working in the town and offering 10 to 18-year-olds the chance to participate in a whole range of maritime activities.

These youth groups, and indeed the scouts (I am a former Cub and Scout Leader), offer fantastic opportunities and teach valuable lessons that will last a lifetime – I wholeheartedly encourage young people to get involved.
