A MAN has described his decision to join Penarth RNLI as "one of the best things" he has ever done.

James Lock, 58, has spoken to the Penarth Times of his joy in joining the local lifeboat station, as part of our campaign to help raise £52,000 for a new boat.

The senior system analyst, who works for the WJEC examination board, has a family history with the national institution as his father was a founding member of the Porthcawl branch. Mr Lock originally joined his dad's station as a teen, before transferring to Penarth a year later.

"It was one of the best things I have ever done," Mr Lock added. "I am so proud to be known as an 'RNLI lifeboat man' and most importantly be with an organisation that stands for saving lives."

He also said one of the best parts is "being part of a close family".

"We work and train closely and are always there for each other," he added.

Mr Lock also said he felt it had helped him in his day job.

He said: "As a Lifeboat man it came naturally for me to volunteer as a first aider, my training with the RNLI shows me how to deal with situations that most people never have to deal with.

"My employer and colleagues are always keen to learn of recent rescues and are supportive when I have to deal with station business.

"At the age of 58 (almost 59) I hope that I can continue to support the station for many years to come.

"I am also very lucky to have such a support wife and family, who allow me the time away from them to carry out my duties at the station."

Mr Lock is a well-respected member of the Penarth RNLI, with Jason Dunlop, lifeboat operations manager, describing him as an "unsung hero".

Mr Dunlop said: "James is one of the unsung heroes of the volunteer team who puts in hundreds of hours each year to ensure our lifeboats are ready at a moments notice throughout the year."

The current campaign for a new boat stands at £19,435.
