WEDDINGS and wakeboarding could be coming to a country park as part of the council’s plans to safeguard its future.

The Vale council has announced that the medieval village at Cosmeston Lakes Country Park is being considered as a wedding venue and that cable wakeboarding could be coming to the eastern section of the lake.

In January, the Vale announced plans to explore various opportunities to generate income at Cosmeston and ensure the park’s future.

Cable wakeboarding involves holding onto a rope attached to a cable mechanism which takes participants around a circuit laid out with ramps and other obstacles.

Subject to planning approval, Cosmeston Lakes Wake Park could start operating in the new year.

Councillor Gwyn John, cabinet member for visible, leisure and regulatory services, said: “The wakeboarding operation at Cosmeston will be unique in South Wales with the nearest similar venue being in the Cotswolds in the West of England.

“The scheme is environmentally friendly and we will be working with Natural Resources Wales to ensure that there is no detrimental impact on the park’s’ ecology or wildlife.”

Speaking about the proposals to hold weddings in the medieval village, councillor Lis Burnett, cabinet member for regeneration and education, said: "The countryside services team has received a number of requests from couples interested in holding their weddings and receptions at Cosmeston Lakes Country Park.

"This is understandable as it offers hugely attractive settings for such a special occasion."

The council has two sites within the medieval village of Cosmeston Country Park where people could hold ceremonies, subject to planning consent.

The first is inside the village’s Tithe Barn and the second within Reeves Cottage.

The council has said that it will also be possible to hold wedding blessings and receptions there.
