PENARTH Acoustic Club has made their third donation of musical instruments to Wales' leading music charity, Community Music Wales (CMW).

More than £600-worth of Djembes - a rope-tuned skin-covered goblet drum - was purchased from Pencerdd Music which was donated to Chris Dawson, project manager at CMW's Fairwater office.

Pencerdd Music also donated a £50 Cajon bongo to the charity.

Mr Dawson said: “The selection of Meinl Djembes and bongo cajon will be used on a regular basis in many workshops throughout Wales. The Acoustic Club’s latest donation has come at a perfect time, as we were looking into how we could fund replacement drums after years of continued use. We are so grateful to Penarth Acoustic Club and their supporters for this donation”.

In addition to a collection of Samba percussion instruments donated last July and Ukuleles donated in December 2015, the club has now provided more than £1300-worth of instruments to the charity.

Delivering workshops, mentoring schemes and community music training across Wales, CMW’s aim is to contribute to the empowerment of disadvantaged groups and individuals through participation in creativity and learning, primarily through making music.

By way of demonstration of the type of activities CMW provide, they will be offering a 30-minute percussion workshop at one of the acoustic club’s sessions next year, so that club supporters can see where their raffle money goes, and also learn some useful skills.

The acoustic club, which holds monthly live music evenings at the Conservative Club in Penarth, uses 100 per cent of the proceeds from the club’s raffles to purchase instruments for charity.

Along with a prior donation of instruments to MIND Cymru in 2015, the club has donated more than £1600-worth of instruments since its inception in November 2014.

The next Penarth Acoustic Club is on Friday, December 16, with Penarth's own Martyn Joseph before he heads on his UK and European tour.
