A SCHOOL has overcome adversity to hold its Christmas fayre despite having to postpone its original event due to a major power cut.

The event at Evenlode Primary School had to be called off on Friday (December 2) as the school had "very limited lighting and heating."

The decision was made to postpone for safety reasons and the children were kept safe and occupied until it was time to go home.

But the fayre has now been rearranged for this Friday (December 9) in show of community and festive spirit with the fayre due to start at 3.45pm.

The parent teacher association at the school has recently had a new committee chosen and this was the first major event that they had organised.

Deborah James, secretary of the parent teacher association (PTA) at the school said: "It is really not what we needed as we are an all new PTA committee this year and really didn’t need this to happen on the first major event we’ve organised.

"But hopefully we might be able to turn our misfortune around and have a successful event at the end of all this."

Evenlode PTA chairwoman, Vicki Edwards, said "We’ve had amazing support from parents, teachers, pupils and local businesses and we couldn’t have done it without them.

"We are an all-new PTA committee this year and our first large event has become even more of a challenge to organise than any of us could have envisaged. "Despite this set back we are hoping for an amazing turnout on Friday afternoon."

"We were all ready to set up last Friday when we received the call that it would not be possible to run the fayre.

"The decision to postpone was absolutely the right thing to do as the school had very limited lights and heating," she said.

Headmaster, Steve Rees, thanked teachers, pupils and parents for their support in what turned out to be a "very stressful" but ultimately very successful day.

He said: "What could have been a disaster was avoided by the resourcefulness and teamwork shown by my teaching staff and the pupils in the school.

"It is regrettable that the Christmas Fayre had to be postponed but we are all looking forward to the event on Friday which promises to be great fun and I’m sure will be a great success."

This year’s fayre will have stalls including bottle and chocolate tombolas, guess the weight of the Christmas cake and a Christmas photo booth where the best photograph will win a prize.

Some of the pupils will be running their own stalls this year and visitors will be able to listen to the school choir who will be making an appearance to sing some festive songs.

Other stalls include face painting, craft stalls, Where’s Santa?, penguin tumble, jolly jars and decorating mugs, biscuits or headbands in the elves’ workshop.

The raffle will be drawn later in the afternoon.
