CARDIFF and Vale University Health (UHB) staff are being urged to get their free flu jab to prevent the spread of infection.

By the end of December 2016, 47.8 per cent of staff had received the jab. While more staff have got their jab compared to last year, those that are still unprotected are vulnerable.

The plea comes after several patients at University Hospital of Wales presented symptoms, meaning wards being closed to prevent the infection spreading.

The flu jab being used has been confirmed as a good match for influenza A(H3), the strain currently circulating in the community.

Executive director of nursing Ruth Walker said: “It’s disappointing that we still have some areas within the UHB where uptake of the flu jab is low.

"Influenza is currently circulating in the community and we know that staff members are falling ill.

“Please look after yourselves and your patients.

"The flu vaccine is still the most effective protection available and takes a few minutes out of your day."

Staff members are reminded not to attend work if they are symptomatic and to practise good hand hygiene, while visitors are advised not to attend hospital if they are unwell.

Staff not yet protected against flu can visit their nearest Flu Champion to get the jab.
