AN OLYMPIC gold medalist will have a plaque installed in the heart of her home village to mark her achievement.

Hannah Mills MBE, originally from Dinas Powys, will be back home on Friday (January 20) for the unveiling at The Twyn in Station Road.

Miss Mills, who was recently awarded an MBE in The Queen's New Year's Honours List, won gold in the 470 sailing in Rio de Janeiro in the summer of 2016 with Saskia Clark.

The unveiling is being organised by Dinas Powys Community Council and begins at 11am.

The ground plaque measures approximate 18 square inches and will be engraved with Miss Mills' name and her achievement in English and Welsh.

Miss Mills first learned to sail in the waters around Penarth with the Cardiff Sailing Centre.

She first teamed up with her 470 sailing partner Saskia Clark in February 2011, gaining silver at the 2011 World Championships followed by gold at the 2012 World Championships.

At London 2012, the pair took the silver medal before going one better and achieving gold in Rio.

Talks have been ongoing as to how to officially recognise her achievements in the village.

There were some calls to name part of a new housing development after her but the community council has decided to install the monument in the village centre.
