A PRIMARY school has been awarded a Green Flag award for its environmental work.

Ysgol Pen y Garth based in Sully Road, Penarth was recognised by Keep Britain Tidy in te eco-schools award.

The award demonstrates that the school is keeping eco-friendly.

Energy usage is monitored and litter picked up every day at the school.

There are special pupil monitors who oversee recycling and make sure taps, computers and lights are switched off when not in use.

A committee meets every month to discuss new potential strategies for the school.

Ideas include encouraging walking and cycling to school, the planting trees, vegetables and fruits and involving parents with the school gardens.

An assessor from Keep Britain Tidy "highly commended" the pupils saying they were very mature in the way they spoke, the way they answered certain environmental questions and their knowledge of the world and environment around them.

Katie Simmons is the co-ordinator the scheme at the school.

"We are thrilled to have received this award," she said.

"The children have worked extremely hard to prove and demonstrate that we are an eco-friendly school,

"We will now strive to continue this work and aim for another award in two years.

"We want to maintain our progress and develop it."
