A SURPRISE party was held at a Penarth golf club to celebrated the 100th birthday of one of its members.

Audrey Rayner, who was born on March 2, 1917, and played until she was well into her 90s, marked the milestone with a surprise party at Glamorganshire Golf Club.

She has been a member of the club since 1966 and still attends on most Tuesdays to meet friends.

The birthday celebrations kicked off with a welcome from ladies vice-captain Ann Cook and a message from ladies captain Jan Carling.

The club’s president, Roger Meacham, also gave a birthday toast, and the deputy mayor of Penarth, Councillor Tracey Alexander, also gave her best wishes.

Mrs Rayner said: “It was very good that all the members were thinking of me.

“I was overwhelmed. It was so absolutely great and everyone was so nice.”

More than 60 women attended, presenting Mrs Rayner with flowers, and a cake was also made by her friend Sybil Lane.

During the Second World War Mrs Rayner worked for the Swiss food and drink company Nestle, before joining the Home Guard.

She married her husband, Arthur, in 1949, and moved to South Wales in 1955.

While playing golf in her later years, club members said, she never used a buggy and played in all weathers. Mrs Rayner still attends fitness classes in Albert Road.
