A PENARTH scouts’ unit has been making the most of the warm weather, taking part in a range of outdoor activities.

Les Pugh’s Own Explorers unit firstly had to negotiate a two-and-a-half-hour bike ride, starting at the Leckwith retail park, complete with hill climbs and swift descents alongside the River Taff as far as the Norwegian Church.

Next, it was off to the skate and fitness park. Once quads, biceps and thighs had been tested it was back on the bikes and across the barrage to the ‘zig-zag’ path, whereby after reaching the summit, a gentle final 10-minute ride saw them back at PADSAC - their final stop.

Taking full advantage of the hottest day yet this year it was off to the Brecon Canal at Pontypool for a 12-mile paddle to Goitre Wharf. Six members took part using both kayaks and open canoes, experiencing a gentle and relaxed journey which took them past herons, fowls and calves whilst keeping in the shade of the large bankside trees.

After four hours of paddling, the explorers finally returned to Pontypool.
