PENARTH's Carnival Weekender begins this Friday (July 14) with a night of music and fireworks as finalists from The Voice 2017 headline the performance.

It part of town's annual summer festival returns which is taking place this month and part one is an evening event which will culminate in the traditional Carnival Day firework display on the seafront.

From 6pm until 10pm on The Esplanade, Penarth Town Council has arranged for live music presented by the BBC's radio and television presenter Bethan Elfyn including performances from The Voice Finalists 2017 Into the Ark, Junior Bill, Ofelia and Rachel K Collier as well as a DJ set by GRL TLK.

There will be food and drink from local traders, and circus street shows to enjoy, with a big firework finale at 10pm.

Previously held on just the Saturday, this year Carnival Day will be spread over two days in what the town council is describing as the Carnival Weekender.

Ms Elfyn said: "Its carnival time. Not just any carnival – its a chance to see some bands in a free open air concert with a world class view on our doorstep - what a unique opportunity, location and atmosphere.

"Penarth’s party vibe is always amazing, and every event I’ve been to is always heaving, so I hope we can celebrate in style on Friday.

"I want to feel like Fat Boy Slim on Brighton beach by the end of the night with my hands in the air, dancing till dawn, and swinging in the sea breeze. Let’s go."

Junior Bill’s mix of ska, reggae, and politically charged music will be first on at 7pm followed by folk favourites Ofelia and Swansea pop siren Rachel K Collier will be the penultimate act before Into the Ark take a break from the Tom Jones tour to join the event as headliners at 9pm.
