THIS postcard image of Penarth Dock in the early 1960s shows just a few of the “mothballed” reserve fleet of Royal Navy ships which were surplus to requirements after the Second World War.

The fleet comprised of 300 ships which were mostly frigates, corvettes and destroyers.

The best of these ships were sold off to either African or South American countries with the rest broken down for scrap.

The first ship to be moored at the dock arrived in September 1952.

Many thanks to Andrew Coslett from the Images of Bygone Penarth Facebook page for providing this image.
