COUNCILLORS have hailed the delivery of a number of highway schemes in the area which are set to improve road safety.

Independent councillors Kevin Mahoney and Bob Penrose who represent Sully on the Vale council have welcomed the initiatives in Sully and Cosmeston as work begins on the various projects in the area.

The schemes involved include puffin and toucan crossings on Lavernock Road outside Cosmeston Lakes Country Park and on South Road near Burnham Avenue, a realignment of the Sully Moors roundabout, improvements to the junction of Cog Road and South Road, an extension of the kerb at Clevedon Avenue and vehicle activated signs from Sully Library to Swanbridge.

The total cost of the schemes have yet to be revealed but Welsh Government has provided £250,000 for the Lavernock Road scheme near Cosmeston Lakes Country Park and £252,000 for the works in Sully.

The Vale council gave the schemes the green light in early 2017 and has been carrying work out on the various schemes which has now seen work start on the Cosmeston crossing.

Cllr Mahoney said: “We have worked incredibly hard and this sort of thing doesn’t happen overnight.

“We have been working away behind the scenes. It is a matter of perseverance and it does take time. It is nice to see the realities of this work.”

He said that he and Cllr Penrose have been campaigning for a new crossing at Cosmeston for five years.

Cllr Mahoney also thanked the highways department at the Vale council for their work on the planning, design and delivery of the schemes.

A Vale of Glamorgan Council spokesman said: “Work has already begun on installing puffin and toucan crossings on South Road and Lavernock Road while further work to improve traffic safety measures in Cosmeston and Sully are likely to continue over the next couple of months.

“Estimates for the total costs of the works are still to be finalised, but Welsh Government has provided £250,000 for the Lavernock Road Scheme and £252,000 for work in Sully.”

He added: “That will be supplemented by Section 106 funding.

“The council is pleased to undertake this work, which will modernise the highway network in these areas, making them safer for pedestrians and road users.”
