TWO local teenagers have been selected to represent the UK at the European Scouting Event in the Netherlands later this year.

Chloe Roots, 17, from Dinas Powys, and Penarth's Owain Thomas, 18, will be taking part in 'Roverway', a gathering of Scouts and Guides aged 16-22 from across Europe set to take place between July 21 and August 2, 2018.

More than 300 UK participants will join 3,000 other young people from across the continent to embark on nine days of adventure, fun and learning.

Miss Roots said: “I am really looking forward to learning new skills from other international Scouts.

"I am hoping to build on my confidence skills by meeting new people and making new international friends.

"I am also looking forward to trying new food and sharing fun experiences with Scouts from around the world."

Scouts will gather in Amsterdam before moving on to The Hague for a beachside opening ceremony, after which participants will be split into multinational teams to travel around the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg, where they will undertake a variety of challenges.

All 3,000 participants will then come back together at Scoutinglandgoed Zeewolde for water activities and to attend training and development sessions.

Chief Scout Bear Grylls wished participants well, saying: "I’d just like to say a massive good luck to our brilliant UK contingent.

"The diversity of people they will meet will remind us all about what the world has to offer. They will experience new cultures and make many new friends, becoming ever more tolerant and caring about others through this experience."
