Success for Penarth Cricket Club youngsters, with winter training set to start

THE Glamorgan Memory Lane Cakes Indoor League has provided a rare certainty of fixtures for Penarth Cricket Club youngsters after the rain of 2012.

Penarth fielded teams at both under-9 and under-11 levels in what is a highly competitive league environment, and both teams played with distinction to each take second place.

The under-11s won five of their seven matches. This was some achievement, indeed, for what was a very young squad which featured only four boys playing in their right age group.

Matt Frost, Ethan Mulcahy, Aled Rees and Gabe Howard were aided most effectively by no fewer than five youngsters young enough to also play for the under-9s. In fact, one of the five victories came with a team of Ethan plus five under-9s!

The under-9s topped their table from the very first match and were undefeated with a 100 per cent record going into their final game. A narrow defeat to Cardiff unfortunately enabled Lisvane to pip Penarth on bonus points to first place.

Having already defeated Lisvane, the under-9s took second place with no small amount of disappointment; dissipated somewhat when the boys were supplied shortly after by an array of cakes from the sponsors.

Steff Crimp, Will Skone, Greg Cross, Benji Mulcahy and Joe Duffy all contributed to the effort of both under-9s and under-11s whilst Iwan Meddins, Zac Essenhigh, Adam Grosfils and Rhys Knapper all excelled whilst making their indoor league debuts.

Indoor training takes place at Stanwell School starting on Thursday, January 24. New talent is always welcome. School year 2-4 start at 5.30pm and school year 5 and 6 at 6.30pm.
