Vale of Glamorgan club helps growth of women’s football
2:10pm Saturday 9th March 2013 in Sport
GIRLS’ football has been growing rapidly in the Vale of Glamorgan recently, with a new club, Vale Ladies’ and Girls’ Football Club, at the forefront of the development of the female game.
The club, which launched in the summer of 2012,has already become one of the largest female-only clubs in South Wales, having created extensive links with local schools in all areas of the Vale.
Currently, with five teams and 85 players competing in the South Wales Girls’ League, the club is growing on a weekly basis, with new players being inspired to take up the sport.
As well as running existing teams, the club has been very proactive in providing opportunities for girls to experience football through school programmes and festivals.
In November, 2012, the club launched the first Girls’ Football Primary School League which brings 15 teams from 12 schools in the area together on a fortnightly basis to play regular friendly matches.
Chairman Luke Williams said: “The club has successfully created links with over 25 schools in the local area as we see this as a fundamental area for the future growth of the game.
“Girls’ football is becoming more and more popular and the creation of the school league and festivals that we host provide opportunities for girls to experience football in a fun and friendly environment.
“We offer football for girls aged seven to 16 and, from September, we will be launching our first ladies’ team, creating a pathway for players to continue playing into their adult life. We cater for all abilities so come and give it a go.”
The club is running two open evenings for girls to get a taster session of football and to find out more about our club opportunities. Just turn up and play on either of the dates below.
● Thursday, March 14, 5pm to 6pm at Penarth Leisure Centre.
● Wednesday, March 20, 5pm to 6pm at Cadoxton Sports Hall, Barry.
