DINAS POWYS 2
DINAS POWYS' opening Welsh League home game attracted a good crowd, with manager Dave Penikett making a few changes to the team that beat Ely Rangers on the previous Tuesday because of injuries to key players and unavailability.
Caerleon settled the quicker and began to pressurise the Dinas defence. At the other end, a good run down the left by Ben Ahmun came to nothing when his cross was cleared.
The first corner of the game went to Caerleon and Richard Snooks' header was gathered at full stretch by Dinas 'keeper James Curtin. However, from another corner on the half hour mark, Nathan Murphy gave the visitors the lead with a powerful header.
Dinas thought they had equalised when Joe Briscombe volleyed Luke Swaffield's cross on target but Caerleon 'keeper Neil Zenadi blocked the shot with his legs.
Dinas forced their first corner just on half-time but the Caerleon defence dealt with it capably and the visitors just about deserved their interval lead.
The second half commenced with the hosts forcing an unproductive corner and, at the other end, Jamie Davies hit a powerful shot which was just wide of the upright. Dinas began to exert more pressure and were rewarded when Paul Penikett headed home a corner 15 minutes into the half. They continued to press looking for another goal to no avail.
Dinas then rang the changes, replacing the hard-working Dimitri Fallas with Matthew Tucker. A shot from Briscombe forced a good save from Zenadi.
Caerleon substitute Scott Lewis was played through for a one-on-one with the 'keeper and he slotted the ball home to give the visitors the lead.
Then came the goal of the game when a Dave Penikett free kick was half cleared and the ball fell to James Bloxham who, with his back to goal, executed a spectacular bicycle kick into the top of the net.
Dinas kept up the pressure but, as time ran out, a draw was just about a fair result.
Dinas squad: James Curtin, Luke Swaffield, Danny Street, Dave Penikett, James Bloxham (capt), Paul Penikett, Connor Parsons, James Ndarr, Joe Briscombe, Dimitri Fallas, Ben Ahmun, Matthew Tucker, Dan Owen, Carlos Indjai, Mike Lazarou and Anthony Mayhill.
Dinas entertained Ely Rangers on Tuesday evening, while Penrhiwceiber Rangers visit the Murch this Saturday, August 31), kick-off 2.30pm.
