FOLLOWING an impressive three wins in their pre-season friendlies, Dinas Powys Ladies Football Club were fired up for their first league game at home to Hafod.
The team has been strengthened over the summer with a programme of fitness training and additional signings which has increased the squad to 18 players.
The first half showcased Dinas' discipline and structure as they controlled the midfield and provided ball for strikers Lisa Grindley and Charlotte Bloxham. This early pressure earned a goal as Bloxham buried the ball in the top corner from inside the box.
In the second half, Hafod came out attacking, and Dinas' defence, led by captain Emma "Bridgey" Thompson, was solid as a back four and 'keeper Hayley Imperato made the right calls and decisions to maintain a clean sheet.
In reply, Dinas midfielders Jo Jones and Nao Yahada increased the pressure and proved a handful for the Hafod defence, running through them to make ground and getting the ball out to the wingers. This period of "power play" led to a glut of chances for the strikers which were converted by Emily Gillard (sub for Grindley) and man of the match Bloxham, who scored an additional three goals.
Dinas: Hayley Imperato, Shazia Zahoor, Rhian Penikett, Emma Thompson, Vicky Ellison, Jo Jones, Nao Yahada, Brooke Howell, Chantelle Chapman, Lisa Grindley and Charlotte Bloxham. Subs: Laura Lewis, Emily Gillard, Laura Murray, Rachel Beare and Sam Saunders. Manager, Neil Cordy.
Dinas' next home game is against Vale Ladies at 5.45pm on September 11 at Bryn-y-Don playing field. The side welcome plenty of support.
