SPECIAL DAY: Old Pens u7s, with coaches Stuart Barter and Ritchie Craven, at Sunday's special training session on the new artificial pitch at Cardiff Arms Park.
SUNDAY brought a special training session for the Old Penarthians Rugby Club under 6s, 7s, 8s and 9s on the new artificial pitch at Cardiff Arms Park.
The session was organised by under 7s coach Stuart Barter and, prior to the start, all 50 children held an impeccable minute's silence in memory of Owen Morris, the 14-year-old rugby player from Llanishen RFC who died suddenly during training.
Split into age groups, the teams took part in 90 minutes of pre-season training and games.
Stuart said: "There had been a buzz of great excitement around the children when they found out about the training session. Although most had been to the ground to support the Blues, none had played on the pitch and it was an experience they will not forget."
All the coaches and children were impressed with the new playing surface and agreed it should lead to great running rugby and, hopefully, a good season for the Blues.
Old Pens run sides for all ages, with an emphasis on learning and enjoying the game of rugby from the under 6 training squad up to the under 13s.
Stuart said the under 7 squad was mostly filled with children who had progressed from the under 6s. Last year the under 7s had a very successful season with all the children growing in confidence and skills. Stuart feels that training sessions like the one at the Arms Park help the development of players and hopes that he will be back to see some of the players playing for the Blues.
The mini and junior sections are now back in full training after the summer break.Training takes place on Sunday mornings at 10.30am at Cwrt yr Vil Playing Fields, with games also due to start this week against Pentyrch. There are a few spaces available in most age groups so any new players are more than welcome.
