CANTON U14s 0
PENARTH RFC U14s 22
AFTER the short trip to Canton, Penarth Rugby Club U14s were keen to put training drills into practice against keen opposition.
With a number of players unavailable or injured, others were playing slightly out of position and, trying to iron out negative points from their last game, Penarth started well against some committed tackling as Josh gathered a loose pass and sprinted in from 30 metres. Ben J converted.
Canton attacked through their lively forwards and some dangerous running backs, but Penarth were up to the task with some determined tackling led by Ellis and Haaris.
Penarth scored again when, after winning a series of rucks, Tom G picked up at the base of a scrum and dived over. Unfortunately, he was injured as he scored and took no further part.
With Canton often giving away possession, Penarth pounced on a loose kick and put together a number of slick passes for Ellis to romp over wide out. Unfortunately, there was more injury woe for Penarth as Ben J was injured in a tackle and left the field, with Henry W stepping up to the task at outside half.
What proved to be the last score of the first half and the match fell to Josh after he picked up another wayward kick and set off on a meandering run which took him past six would-be tacklers with good use of his hand off to score out wide. Replacement kicker Gryff was just wide with the conversion.
It was very much stalemate in the second half, with Penarth on the back foot but keeping their try line intact with great defensive performances by Geraint, Niall and Tomo. Luc and Gryff continued to figure prominently in Penarth attacks.
Penarth will look to build on this display, with the emphasis being on more cutting edge finishing and more clinical work in rucks.
Thanks are extended to Canton and their players and coaches for acting as hosts at short notice and to supporters from both clubs who made it such an enjoyable match.
The after match celebration song was led by 'Dame of the Game' Gryff who received the award for his determined running combined with textbook tackling and brilliant acrobatic skills.
