PENARTH RFC U14s 27pts

BRY NCETHIN 12

FOLLOWING the cancellation of their game at Porthcawl, Penarth Rugby Club U14s entertained Bryncethin who had completed some handsome wins in recent games.

Both sides had not played for a number of weeks due to the poor weather and struggled to field full teams due to unavailability and injuries. As a result, some players were playing out of position, but showed great character in unfamiliar positions.

Penarth were first to score late in the first half, with Ben J completing a great passing movement after pouncing on a loose ball and managing to outpace the defence. From the restart, Bryncethin kept possession well to work themselves into the Penarth half and, after pinching the ball in contact, their No 6 emerged from the side of a ruck to sprint fully 50 metres to score a converted try under the posts.

Trailing by two points, Penarth hit back well before half time with two tries. Following a kick and chase, Josh sent Joe in close to the posts and then the former turned scorer after chasing a well-placed kick by Ben.

With Penarth leading 15-7, both teams competed well at the contact area in the second half despite some forced changes due to injury. There were uncontested scrums after the Bryncethin hooker and captain was forced off through injury.

Penarth gained a penalty following some excellent work by Ellis and the ball was quickly worked wide to Lyle who dived in. With Penarth relaxing, Bryncethin hit back with a try by their speedy wing who beat four defenders on his way to the line.

Penarth managed to score the best try of the game when, after some great passing between backs and forwards, Ben J ran in from the opposition 22, taking two defenders with him as he twisted over. Joe converted.

Despite increased pressure from the visitors, Penarth defended stoutly for a deserved win.

Thanks go to Bryncethin for their great attitude and to the supporters from both teams.

'Dame of the Game' was Ellis for his courageous defensive work. Well done to all 15 players, especially those in different positions than usual, ie, Tom G, Joe, Ben E, Tomo and Lyle.

Squad: Geraint, Tom, Niall, Liam, Tom J, Haaris, Ben E, Ellis, Joe, Ben J, Tomo, Henry W, Lyle, Josh and Luc.
