KENFIG HILL U14s 17pts
PENARTH RFC U14s 40
WITH a personal tally of four tries and one assist, Josh Lewis played a major role in Penarth Rugby Club U14s' comfortable and worthy win at Kenfig Hill.
Against the 'Mules,' the Penarth team displayed a lot of their true potential, showing control in the forward exchanges and contact area, while making, in the main, correct decisions in the back line.
Both teams started well, attempting to run wide and test the defences early on and Penarth achieved the breakthrough when, fed on the right wing, Josh showed two deft sidesteps to beat the defenders and score. The 'Mules' hit back with two tries, using their huge No 7 from a tap penalties, and converted one to put them in front.
Penarth regained the lead when, from a penalty and forward surges led by Geraint and Niall, Gruff gathered at the base of a ruck and dived over. Ben J converted.
From the restart, Penarth worked the ball wide through the backs, using Morgan and Henry to release Ben who unselfishly fed Josh who positioned himself well to beat the last defender to score. Ben J converted.
The 'Mules' hit back to narrow Penarth's half-time advantage to 19-17, but the visitors dominated the second half with their brand of running rugby involving outside backs whenever possible and close support play by all forwards, especially Luc counter attacking from full back after any Kenfig kicks or power drives by Niall, Ellis and Tomo.
Penarth scored three unanswered tries, two of which came from Josh, one after a cheeky chip and chase, and both of which were converted by Ben J. The final try came from Ellis after Josh had initially powered to 10 metres out. Ben E showed great strength to secure the ball and Ellis drove low from the back of the ruck to score. Ben J again converted.
Following a team performance of great cohesion and commitment, Penarth's "Dame of the Game" was Luc at full back for his determined running and tackling. There were also congratulations to Alex O on his first team outing and Lyle as chief photographer.
Squad: Geraint, Tom G, Niall, Alex S, Hugh, Haaris, Tomo, Ellis, Alex O, Ben E, Tom J, Gruff, Ben J, Henry C, Morgan, Ethan, Josh and Luc.
