THE Executive would like to thank all the teams that took part in the National Veterans’ Championship and for making the competition another very enjoyable day at the Wenvoe PC on Sunday, March 29.

After a preliminary round in the morning, the top eight teams qualified for the championship elimination rounds in the afternoon. Only two out of the 12 teams that entered won all of their games in the morning; the two teams being KPB (Barbara Vaughan, Kon Tomczyk from Caerleon RFC PC and Phil Bradshaw from Monkstone Inn PC) and the Monkstone Minotaurs (Vickie and Bernard Adshead and Keith Nott).

In the quarter-final stage the four most experienced teams qualified for the semi-finals, of which one of the teams was the reigning champions Age Concern. Unfortunately, The Monkstone Minotaurs failed to capitalised on their success in the preliminary round.

The final was between KPB and the Monkstone Monarchs (Mike Jones, John Barnes and Roger Griffin), unfortunately the Monarchs could not stop KPB from taking the lead and pull way to win 13:5 and take the title.

The winning team of Barbara Vaughan, Kon Tomczyk and Phil Bradshaw will now be invited to attend the Over 55′s European Championship, which is to be held in Lulelå, Sweden between June 27 and 28.

Congratulations to the Wenvoe team of Gloria Davies, Karen Macleod and Mike Coleman for winning the competition.

The next competition in the WPA calendar is the Ladies Triples Championship to be held at Monkstone PC, Roath, on April 6.
