THERE was some quality and combative play when the Penarth Bowling Club held their winter indoor season finals.

Watched by an enthusiastic and receptive collection of supporters, the weekend concluded with both the ladies' and men's championship deciders and the pick being former between Belinda Price and Jayne Edwards.

In a game in which the winner was always in doubt, Jayne edged to victory over the last few ends. Having fallen behind 15-9 on the 15th end, Jayne rallied with some classic bowling to hold a 20-17 lead and looked like taking the title. Belinda took two shots on the next end to come back to 20-19 down and, on the 25th end, held one shot, with each player having one wood to play. Belinda decided to attempt to draw a second shot to win, but, in doing so, nudged the jack to her opponent's back wood for Jayne to win 21-19.

A magnificent game of bowls was a credit to both players and was played in wonderful spirit and with a multitude of quality bowls. Jayne undoubtedly raised her game to the highest level to beat a very experienced and competitive opponent.

On the adjoining rink and at the same time, Jayne's evergreen father, Peter Small, had the formidable task of trying to beat the wiry old fox of bowls, Dennis Edwards. Whereas this game did not reach the heights of the ladies' final, both bowlers produced a compelling contest, with Dennis eventually triumphing 21-14.

In the weekend's other games, Wendy Grant won Novices Cup after beating Chris Davies, while, in the ladies' two wood singles, Belinda Price saw off the challenge of a somewhat out of sorts Jacquie Regan to win the Eve Williams Celebration Cup.

Jacquie, however, was not to be denied a trophy and, along with Joan Lewis and Jayne Edwards, she triumphed in the triples final, beating Marion Vanstone, Mo Musk and Cynthia Tranter.

The Phyllis Curtis Cup went to Joan Phelps and Betty Jones as they triumphed over Viv Duckers and Mary Bowen in the ladies' two wood pairs title.

The ladies' four wood pairs final was won by Mo Musk and Betty Jones, who held off a late recovery from Val Turner and Diana Willcocks to win 16-15.

In the mixed pairs final, Belinda Price and Bob Hill won 22-11, while, in the men's four wood pairs for the Captain's Challenge Cup, Lawrence Brooke and Bob Lewis turned an early 12-8 deficit into a 26-20 victory.

Just one shot separated the rinks contesting the Knockout Trophy, with the Untouchables edging out the Cavaliers 15-14. With the closely fought game tied at 13-13 after 15 ends, Ron Birkby steered his four to a narrow victory.

Played for the first time this year was a men's two wood competition for a memorial trophy presented by the family of H G Ivor Thomas. The inaugural event was won by Derek Blainey and Bob Lewis who beat Terry Buckingham and Roger Mauchline, with the former leading from the first end to win 19-14.

The weekend concluded with the presentation of trophies with thanks being given to all competitors, spectators and organisers. Particular thanks to Nick Thomas and Sandra Whitfield for their hard work and efforts in making it a successful weekend conclusion to a great indoor season.
