ON Saturday Barry Athletic Cricket Club entertained local rivals Sully Centurions in The season’s league opening match, with rain forecasted Sully won the toss and asked Barry to bat first obviously realising that if they hadn’t the game could have been over long before tea.

Barry’s openers new signing David Goodway and the ever reliable Steve Provis got Barry of to a solid start as they put on 162 for the 1st wicket before Goodway fell for a solid and well worked 86 LBW to young Adam Sylvester, Goodway’s innings included 12 Fours and came from 94 balls, the score then moved on to 185 before Sylvester bowled Rhett Jones for 2, Steve Provis reached 86 before he became the 3rd wicket to go caught off the bowling of Patel his innings including 11 fours and 1 six and came in 95 balls. There then came cameos from Nathan Baker 15, Craig Brock 16, Andrew Buckland 10 not out and Young Aaron Smith 10 as Barry rattled up 262 for 6 in their 50 overs.

Sully’s innings was soon in turmoil as Barry Captain came into his own as he had Ferdouz caught and bowled with the score on 0, Ben Spear went to the ever reliable Peter Hellyar for 7 with the score on 8, then John Gee took 2 wickets in 2 balls for the first time when he had Sullivan LBW for 4 the score 15 for 3 very next ball he had Nick Jones first ball for 0 Stumped Nathan Baker the score now 15 for 4, Sully then moved on to 27 before John Gee was on his 2nd hat trick of the innings as he removed Tom Edwards for 5 with the score now 27 for 5, next ball he removed Lloyd Bruce for a first ball duck the score now 27 for 6. 2 balls later he removed Patel caught Steve Jones for 0 the score was now 27 for 7. The next over Peter Hellyar removed to Davies for 4 with the score now on 27 for 8, there then came a partnership of 51 between young Adam Sylvester and Jake Griffith but with the score on 78 Sylvester left a straight one and was bowled off the bowling of Steve Jones for 10, score now 78 for 9. With the weather coming in Barry tried their hardest to get the final wicket, but Sully survived thanks to elements, Barry must think themselves very unlucky as a massive win was on the cards and maximum points Sully ended on 89 for 9, John Gee with impressive figures of 10 overs 3 maidens 6 wickets for 25 runs.

It was a very similar story with the 2nd XI at Sully where Barry batted 1st and got 272 for 7 with Paul Murphy getting a 100 and Ashley Davies 50, with Sully on 88 for 8 before the rain Came.

This Saturday Barry Athletic 1st XI are away at The Welsh Asians in Rhoose, The 2nd XI at Home to Croesyceiliog at The Athletic Ground, Barry Island.
