NEWPORT Gwent Dragons wing Tom Prydie is aiming to profit from teammate Hallam Amos' injury by securing a place on Wales' tour to South African.

The 22-year-old is bidding to be back up to Lions aces George North and Alex Cuthbert against the Springboks and will look to press his claims at the national team's Vale of Glamorgan headquarters this week.

Prydie, who has won five caps, is in the possibles squad for Friday's trial match at the Liberty Stadium in Swansea and there are certainly spots up for grabs in the back three courtesy of Leigh Halfpenny and Amos' shoulder injuries.

Liam Williams, North (who does not feature for the trial because of Northampton's Aviva Premiership final) and Cuthbert are inked in to start against the Boks.

However, bench cover and starters in the midweek warm-up against Eastern Province Kings will be needed in Warren Gatland's 31-man squad..

"It's a great opportunity to be in the Welsh set-up again and impress the coaches," said the winger, whose last cap came against Japan last summer.

"It's good to be in a quality environment with the top players in the country. Fingers crossed I can do well all week and play well in the trial and hopefully get on the flight.

"George and Alex are great players and deserve their places on the wing but the rest of us are looking to push them hard. That's a huge challenge but one I'm looking forward to."

If Prydie can earn a slot on the tour then it would ensure a happy ending to a frustrating campaign.

He made 14 appearances for the Dragons but was hindered by two injuries – a strained hamstring suffered while training for Wales ahead of the Tonga Test in November and then a twisted ankle on his comeback against Bath in January.

"It was great to be called up last autumn and within two days I was packing my bags," he lamented. "Then first game back I injured my ankle and had another two months out.

"It was so frustrating but that's the nature of professional sport. It was a nightmare season but at least I got a run of games at the end of the season and managed to get selected for the trial."
