THE terrible weather put paid to any thoughts of cricket on last Saturday at Penarth Cricket Club and all four sides had to spend the afternoon watching sports more normally associated with the winter months.

The gloom of the weather was matched by the general malaise that fell over the club on hearing of the death of ex-captain John Skone the previous Sunday.

John was a passionate supporter of cricket , rugby and bowls which he played to great effect after his retirement as a teacher at St Cyres School. Within his role at St Cyres he also became involved in school sport in particular cricket.

He went on to become a Welsh schoolboy selector and was widely respected for his knowledge and dedication to youth cricket.

John was a Pembokeshire boy at heart but having moved to Penarth he went on to captain the cricket club and was an integral part of the league and cup winning sides of the early 80s. John was also an excellent committee man and he was instrumental in procuring much needed equipment for the club.

John will be greatly missed by all at the cricket club and by many more people in Penarth and the whole of South Wales.

Our thoughts go out to his wife Pam and son and daughter Richard and Jenny.
