THE Penarth Bowling Club's Munro Cup ambitions suffered a jolt with a shock defeat against local rivals Windsor.

Both sides selected very strong teams, but Windsor proved the stronger with a convincing 81-56 victory.

The only Penarth rink to salvage anything was skipped by Nick Chandler ably assisted by Gareth Rosser, Dick Edwards and Guy Thomas. Their 18-16 win over Matt Woodcock's rink brought a welcome two points and was undoubtedly down to some excellent bowling by the Penarth four. Chandler pulled some exquisite shots out of the bag to totally frustrate the Windsor quartet.

Colin Grant's rink surrendered a narrow lead on the 18th end, dropping two shots and losing 16-17.

The Dave Clements (14-20) and Dave Dalby (8-28) rinks were both defeated on a disappointing evening for Penarth.

Ebullient Windsor captain Paul Gunter enjoyed his post pasty speech and was quick to raise expectations for the forthcoming PG1 encounters. Revenge could be very sweet!

Spirits in the Rectory Road camp were revived by a convincing PG1 victory over visitors Pentyrch, with the hosts winning on three rinks and taking 12 points. Penarth led by 14 shots at the halfway stage with all four rinks leading. The rinks skipped by Colin Grant (28-12), Nick Chandler (25-10) and Dave Clements (21-11) pulled away in the second half to ensure the overall win. Dave Dalby's rink, unfortunately, let their lead slip, dropping seven shots on the last four ends to lose 15-22.

Sunday afternoon saw Whitchurch Hospital arrive for a PG2 rearranged fixture and, in glorious conditions, Penarth's hopes of a victory were dashed when the visitors ran out comfortable 100-74 winners.

The only rink to salvage any points was Bob Lewis, Nick Thomas, John Bowen and captain Lawrence. After going six shots down, they rallied well and were seven shots to the good after 10 ends. They never surrendered the lead and eventually registered a 27-11 win.

The Ron Maggs rink was looking good for another two points but faltered through the last seven ends to lose 20-23. Both the Reg Jones and Colin Grant rinks went down heavily (15-30) and (12-36) respectively.

So only two points secured after a disappointing day in the summer sun.
