A TEAM from Evenlode Primary School, Penarth, has tasted success at the South Wales Kwik Cricket finals at St Fagan's Cricket Club.

Marking the culmination of festivals run in cricket clubs and local authorities across South Wales and involving more than 300 children from across the region, the finals day was organised by Cricket Wales,

Evenlode's success came in the mixed competition where they came through a strong group to make it to the final by just six runs.

Playing a talented side from Carmarthen, some brilliant bowling from Kreshay Bharwani and Lewis Ingram and strong batting from Ben Mulcachy and Greg Cross saw Evenlode comfortably through to the final.

Their final opponents were Glasllych PS, Newport, winners for the past two years who had knocked out Evenlode at the semis stage in 2013. Batting first, Glasllych were restricted to 225 thanks to some sharp fielding from Elys Johnson and Aaron Noormohamed and expert wicketkeeping from Rhys Knapper.

It was then up to the Evenlode batters to stay calm and protect their wickets and this they managed in style with some big fours and sixes from Zac Essenhigh and an overall confident team performance.

In the end, it was a comfortable win for a team, which also included Luc Thomas and Devon Tyso.

David Lloyd, of the Glamorgan Cricket Club, presented trophies to the finalists and T-shirts and certificates to all other schools.

Evenlode now travel to Edgbaston tomorrow (Friday) to represent South Wales in the Midlands finals so it's good luck to Mr Barton and the boys.

Steve Watkins, cricket development officer for Gwent and Mid Wales Council, who organised the event, said: “The aim of the Kwik Cricket competition is to provide children of all levels of ability and experience with an opportunity to regularly participate in a fun, introduction to cricket and to encourage the spirit of cricket.

“This was another excellent competition, and we all wish Evenlode the best of luck at the Midlands finals.”
