PERFORMING basic techniques (kihon), pre-arranged sparring (kumite) and a memorised sequence of movements (kata), 17 students from Penarth AKAD (Association of Karate and Allied Disciplines) enjoyed success in a karate grading event.

The following grades were awarded: 1st kyu (brown), Phoebe Lewis; 3rd kyu (brown), Felice Cirino, Megan Cirino, Alex Murphy, Hannah Murphy, Jamie Murphy and Sofia Creedon; 4th kyu (purple), Mike fox and Abi Fox; 5th kyu (blue), Chris Evans; 6th kyu (green), Thomas Firth; 7th kyu (yellow), Halen Marshall-Carter and Owen Woodlands; 8th kyu (red), Eve Murphy, and 9th kyu (orange), Rick Graham, Will Graham and Joe Doust.

Club instructor Stuart Creedon (5th dan) said: "These individuals have worked hard to reach their current grades and have set a high standard for others to follow."

Stuart, who has 30 years of martial arts experience and has taught adults and children to gain discipline, confidence and respect within the club activities, which, in turn, is applied beyond the dojo, said: "I continue to gain immense satisfaction from teaching this group of individuals. Their level of commitment and attitude towards their continued development has been inspiring. The enthusiasm at the club has been infectious and there has been a noticeable improvement in fitness and ability in the adults and children across the grades. I am extremely proud of every student and the standard they have strived to achieve in attaining their new grades."

The club is an opportunity for youngsters and adults to be physically active, have fun and meet new friends in an enjoyable and friendly atmosphere. New members are always welcome.

The club trains on Monday and Wednesday evenings (6-7pm) at Ysgol Pen-y-Garth sports hall (Sully Road), with higher grade sessions on Monday evenings (7-8pm).
