SULLY Centurians 1st XI match was rained off, but the 2nd XI travelled to Malpas on an overcast day and came off second best in a match that was reduced to 35 overs due to rain.

The home side won the toss and put Centurians in to bat, but in just the second over the rains returned and caused a lengthy delay. On return, Munhim Khan, who had reached five, was bowled by Hassan with the score on just 15. Skipper Dave Sylvester was the next to depart being run out for 18 after putting on 30 with Ricky Griffett. Griffett and Jas Bassi then put on another 31 before Bassi was caught and bowled in spectacular fashion by Mohindra for 14, with the score on 74. Griffett then shifted up a gear and soon went past the 50 mark ably supported by Mark Burnett. The pair shared an entertaining partnership of 84 and both were there at the close with Burnett hitting 20 and Griffett pushing on to a well-made 80, including four sixes and five fours, as the innings finished on 160 for three.

In the Malpas innings, Harri Edwards (2-14) bowled a nice line to frustrate the home openers and was rewarded with the wicket of Simmonds (2) in the fifth over with the score on 10. Mohindra batted well and was top scorer on 54. By the time he was out, with the score on 94, Malpas had lost five wickets. Jones (28) pushed the score along, but Luke Burnett, Dave Sylvester, Josh Bryan and Herbie Miller all chipped in with a wicket each, plus the run out of Margetts, leaving the score on 141 for seven in the 30th over.

With 20 runs required from the last five overs it proved to be a tense finale, but Hassan (13 not out) and Boothroyd (7 not out) held their nerve and the winning runs came with just two overs to go without further loss of wickets. All in all, fine game, played in good spirit.

Malpas II 161-7 Sully Centurians II 160-3.
