Penarth's Munro Cup campaign was put to bed last week with the visit of near rivals Dinas Powis. Unfortunately the early season hopes of success in this competition were well & truly buried with another defeat ( 58 - 73 ). The two winning rinks of Nick Chandler, Guy Thomas, Reg Jones & Nick Thomas ( 18 - 11 ) & Colin Grant, Haydn Trow, Rob Grant & Berwyn Lansley ( 18 - 12 ) were overhauled by the losing rinks of Bob Hill ( 12 - 25 ) & Clive Fry ( 10 - 25 ). No doubt Penarth bowlers will reflect upon what might have been had they not capitulated late on in the competition.

Capitulation was rife in Saturday's PG1 game also when leaders Merthyr Guest Memorial visited Rectory Road. A game which was critical for Penarth to win to hold out any hope of challenging for top spot turned out to be a game of two halves. At the eleventh end, Penarth lead by four shots overall & were looking fairly comfortable. However the status on 3 rinks changed drastically over the final ten ends with defeat for rinks skipped by Bob Hill ( 13 - 28 ), Dave Clements ( 9 - 28 ) & Bob Willmott ( 17 - 22 ). Only Nick Chandler's rink of Phil Davies, Reg Jones & Guy Thomas made any real impression, winning in the end by 27 shots to 8. The overall win for the visitors was a disappointing 20 shot margin ( 66 - 86 ). The best Penarth can hope for now is runners up spot. Looks like Division 3 again next year.

The PG2 side are still going strong, having achieved an excellent win away to Guest Memorial. The result of a 12 shot victory by 80 t0 68 keeps them amongst the leaders. A ten point haul was earned by this win with Mike Conway ( 23 - 12 ) & Roger Gidman ( 23 - 16 ) providing the foundations to secure the points. Mike was well supported by Peter Needham, John Bowen & Joe Ellis, dominating their match by winning on 14 of the 21 ends.

Lawrence Brooke's rink battled gamely only to lose by a single shot ( 18 - 19 ). Ron Maggs suffered a rare reversal going down by 16 - 21. With only 3 games left to play & three teams vying to win the league, Penarth's current second place means that it is all there to play for.
