STANWELL School students have been starring on the sporting stage over the last few weeks.

Regular readers of the school's updates will have followed the sailing career of Will Hall, Year 9, who is now ranked as the number 1 Optimist sailor in his age category after a superb performance at the British National Optimist Championships held at Weymouth. His next challenge is the Optimist World Championships to be held in Argentina this October.

Will is hoping to make sailing his career and to represent Great Britain at the Olympics. He has certainly made a fine start to achieving his dream and all at Stanwell are very proud of him.

Darcy Richardson of Year 9 has also been selected for the prestigious Welsh trampolining squad following a successful performance at the regional championships.

Darcy has been a member of the Carea Vale trampolining club for five years and also competes for Stanwell School.

Harry Williams, of Year 11, played for the Cardiff City Academy for the last eight years and competed in events such as the David Beckham tournament in London.

Harry, who plays in midfield, is taking a break from intensive football training this year in order to concentrate on his GCSEs and hopes to pick up recognition from Welsh Premier clubs and sign for one of them next season.

Logan Nicol, of Year 11, has been selected for the Welsh U16 surfing team. He took part in a selection weekend in Porthcawl at the beginning of August and his fitness levels and style impressed the judges.

Logan has been be competing in the European championships in the Azores, Portugal this month and the school looks forward to hearing about his amazing experiences when he returns.

Stanwell students Alexandra Slack, Year 10, Emma Squire Year 10, Harrison Williams Year 10 and Christopher Slack Year 7 took part in the British International Karate Open in London, at UEL Sports Dock on Saturday, September 13. They were part of the squad representing Karate Wales and achieved the following results: Alexandra : Girls U15 Open (ie all karate styles) kata: bronze
