ST CYRES Under 15 girls’ football team faced Cowbridge in their first Cardiff Cup match.
St Cyres dominated the first half play with Cowbridge rarely getting past the halfway line.
Kayleigh Parsons, Avni Hirani and Elleise Meyrick-Ash created a few attacking opportunities but nothing to really worry the Cowbridge goalkeeper. The breakthrough came towards the end of the first half when captain Amelia Davidson drove the ball from the edge of the box into the corner of the goal.
In the second half, St Cyres continued to press forward for the second goal. Cowbridge began to take advantage of the space left behind and made more attacking runs into the St Cyres half. Morgan Dursley in goal and the defence of Bethan Salter, Kacey Watkins, Hannah Lewis and Nia Jenkins- Welch dealt well with these attacks. However, a momentary lapse of concentration gifted Cowbridge an equaliser.
Amelia Davidson, Megan Kupa and Catrin Lewis then stepped up another gear to really push for a winner. Hannah Watkins, who had come off the subs bench, began to find lots of space on the right. The ball came through to her in front of goal and she slotted it home. St Cyres managed to maintain this 2-1 lead for the rest of the game.
St Cyres would like to thank Cowbridge school for hosting a really exciting game of football.
