THE 17th Glamorganshire Golf Club Ryder cup took place on Saturday, October 4.

Based on the actual Ryder Cup format, but played every year between the members of the club who call themselves Welsh and those who were born outside of Wales. Members qualify by attaining points during the medal competitions held between March and September.

The two Captains this year were Chris Payne, Captain of Wales and Maurice Buchalter Captain of the Rest of the world.

The pre-match dinner on Friday night was excellent with shirts being presented to the competing 18 players per side with the usual banter between the teams.

The Welsh Team got off to a great start and were obviously inspired by the sounds of Delilah reverberating around the clubhouse, during shirt presentations and took a commanding lead during the morning foursomes, played in some very inclement weather.

Wales won the first five matches, only for the rest of the world to come back strongly and take the next three matches, with the final foursomes match being halved.

With Wales needing 9.5 points for overall victory, the weather improved in time for the afternoon fourballs. Some very close matches ensued, however the Welsh were again a bit too strong and victory was sealed by a fantastic chip in by Steve Morris on the 18th for a birdie to the delight of the other Welsh players surrounding the green.

Overall Wales won the afternoon session six points to three points to give Wales a convincing 11 ½:6 ½ victory.

Celebrations continued in the bar and the losing captain Maurice Buchalter presented Chris Payne with the trophy filled by what can only be called a palatable sparkling wine.

A great day was enjoyed by all and the 18th Ryder Cup Captains were chosen as Richard Jeremy (Wales) and Colin Toshack (ROW).
