Dinas Powys Athletic 1 V Cardiff Airport 3

DINAS Powys Athletic lost 3-1 in the second round of the Barry Cup but had the unbeaten Barry Premier decision side on the back foot for long periods of the game.

Cardiff Airport started the game stronger and put the Dinas back four of Llewellyn, Fisher, Butler and H Driscoll under early pressure. This resulted in a loose clearance falling to an Airport player who volleyed home from outside the box to put them one up after just 10 minutes.

This seemed to spur on the Dinas team and the central midfield three of Terrar, Parsons and Stewert started to take control of the game and get better quality into the front three of Mills, C Driscoll and Salvidge.

Dinas got the equaliser after 20 minutes when a long throw was headed home by Stewert. Both sides continued to play open attacking football with Dinas midfielder Terrar unlucky when he hit the inside of the post with a shot.

However it was Airport who got the second goal just before half-time when their striker finished from what seemed like a blatant off-side position, (one of a string of decisions the referee gave to the premier division side).

The Dinas boys were determined to get the equaliser in the second half but it was Airport who applied the early pressure and on 55 minutes their impressive striker finished from what looked like an impossible position.

Again like the first half this goal spurred the Dinas boys on and again they took control of the game with an opening being created by sub Griffiths for Stewert but he missed the target from seven yards.

The game was a tight affair with Dinas looking to get back into it until the 75th minute when the referee sent off H Driscoll for swearing, (to the shock and bemusement of both teams).

After the sending off Airport gained the upper hand and comfortably saw the game out.

This was a good performance by the Dinas lads and will hopefully give them a platform to gain promotion into the Premier Division.

They would like to thank their sponsors Burnett, Davies with Easton Estate Agents in Dinas Powys for sponsoring the boys’ new polo tops.
